Fire department helps church place new cross on steeple

The Gravois Fire Protection District got some practice using its ladder truck helping a local church replace the cross on its steeple June 13.
The Gravois Mills United Methodist Church building is 60 years old. When church members went to repaint the steeple that is original to the church, rotted wood came off in their hands.
It was time for a new cross, and a new steel cross was made by church member Ron Steven.
To replace the old cross Wednesday afternoon, GFPD Shift Leader Billy Warren and Firefighter Jack Haggard went up in the bucket of the district's ladder truck operated by Firefighter Matt Holladay from the turntable below.
Church member Austin Copeland went up on scaffolding on another side of the building to help attach the new cross as well.
