Oklahoma to allow horses to be slaughtered for meat

By Steve Olafson, Barbara Goldberg and Philip Barbara, Reuters

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma took a step toward allowing livestock owners to slaughter horses for food on Friday when the governor signed a bill that permits the practice, but processing plants must first be authorized by the federal government.

Governor Mary Fallin's action legalized the slaughter of horses so that their meat may be prepared and packaged for export. But slaughterhouses must get U.S. Department of Agriculture authorization, Fallin said.

The slaughter of horses for food had been illegal in Oklahoma since 1963 and was carried out only in Texas and Illinois until Congress stopped it in 2006. The congressional ban was lifted in 2011.

Fallin said horse slaughterhouses in Oklahoma would use more humane practices than those in Mexico because they would be inspected by federal authorities.

Horse meat was at the center of a scandal that erupted in Europe in January, when testing in Ireland revealed that some beef products also contained equine DNA.

The United States Humane Society and animal rights activists opposed the new law in Oklahoma, while livestock interests said the change preserves their private property rights and will benefit horse owners.

Police: Babysitter locked toddlers in closet

By Lauren DiSanto, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A teenage babysitter from Newark, Del., is facing a dozen charges of endangering the welfare of a child after police say she locked up 3-year-old twins in the closet of her apartment.

New Castle County police say Veronica Miller, an unlicensed daycare provider, would lock the twins in a closet while she drove to another location to pick up several other children she also watched.

After getting a tip, police went to Miller's apartment on Thursday afternoon.

A maintenance worker let officers inside the apartment, where they found a chair wedged in the hallway between the closet and bathroom door. Police say when they opened the door, they saw the twin toddlers sleeping on the floor with pillows and blankets.

Police say this wasn't the first time this had happened and believe Miller had been doing this since mid-February.

The twins were in good health.

The Division of Family Services is helping police with the investigation.

Fuel Fix ? Hackers hit energy companies more than others

Alert Logic Network Security Analyst Yohance Clark looks for security threats inside the company's security operations center in Houston. (Cody Duty / Houston Chronicle)

Energy companies faced more targeted malware attacks in a six-month period last year than businesses in any other field, with hackers sometimes breaking into systems to steal geologic and financial data, according to a Houston network security firm?s research.

Alert Logic is releasing a report Tuesday detailing the incidence of attacks on its customers in different industries and the digital weapons hackers used in their attempts to infiltrate systems from April 1 to Sept. 30 last year. FuelFix examined the report ahead of its general release.

Though the report does not include information about how many attacks successfully breached computer security walls, the company?s research showed that attackers have been able to extract data and post it online for public viewing, said Stephen Coty, director of threat research for Alert Logic.

?What we see posted out there is not really what I worry about,? Coty said. ?It?s what?s not posted out there. Because what?s not posted out there is the valuable data that?s being traded, sold, exchanged for different reasons.?

Worldwide: Cyberattack risk high for oil and gas industry

The report focused on activity monitored among Alert Logic?s customers, which include FuelFix?s parent company, the Hearst Corp.

Sixty-one percent of the 54 energy companies that Alert Logic serves experienced targeted malware attacks, according to the report.

Such attacks often involve malicious software that company workers load inadvertently onto their networks, through contaminated USB drives, links in emails, or infected websites.

Other types of Internet attacks that Alert Logic studies include ?brute force,? in which a malicious group attempts a series of passwords to break into a system, or ?web application attacks,? targeting data stored in online application services.

Alert Logic Senior Security Analyst Chris Dehghanpoor looks for security threats inside the company's security operations center, Monday, March 25, 2013, in Houston. The Houston-based network security company manages online threats of their Security-as-a-Service in the cloud for different entities. (Cody Duty / Houston Chronicle)

Energy companies also experienced more brute force attacks than companies in any other industry, according to the report, with 67 percent of Alert Logic?s energy customers sustaining such attacks.

While electronic attacks have the potential to disrupt fundamental energy company operations, and even cause equipment to malfunction, many of the assaults on energy companies so far have gone after data, Coty said.

Deep-water danger: Malware threatening offshore rig security

Still, there are examples of attacks of all scales. A virus targeting the world?s largest oil company, Saudi Aramco, infected 30,000 computers last August and was aimed at interrupting its oil operations.

And the activist hacking group Anonymous published email addresses and passwords last year for hundreds of employees of major oil companies including Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, and Russia?s Rosneft.

Other hacks have retrieved oil companies? handbooks or even geologic data, Coty said.

But the information posted online is often material that hackers don?t believe has much value.

?If a hacker breaks into an energy site, they grab a bunch of data and they keep what?s interesting,? Coty said.

But hackers typically don?t post online information about geology, drilling depths, or financial dealings, he said.

?The actual survey data, like how deep did they have to drill or what did the soil samples look like, things like that would be valuable to other people,? Coty said.

Even the hackers who published the big oil company email addresses said they were withholding some emails for use in further attacks, according to the posting.

Weather warning: Hurricanes are trial run for cyberattacks, energy leaders say

Computer attacks targeting energy companies, from power generators to oil producers, illustrate how vigilantly businesses must monitor their networks, Coty said.

?A lot of it is really knowing what you?ve lost,? he said. ?We spend a lot of our time mining lost and stolen data.?

Even businesses that haven?t been hacked ? or don?t know they have ? may not be safe.

?A lot of companies are like, ?Hey, we?ve never been breached.? And maybe you haven?t,? Coty said. ?But maybe a third party has that has your data.?

Most of Alert Logic?s 2,100 customers are outside of the energy industry, and no sector sustained a higher rate of targeted malware attacks than energy companies. Coming in second were financial services businesses, about 20 percent of which were attacked, according to the report.

Alert Logic had 1,801 customers at the time of the study and reviewed 46,475 ?verified security incidents? out of more than 1 billion suspicious events it observed in the six-month period.

Orphaned polar bear moving to New York

An orphaned polar bear cub found near Alaska's northwest coast is set to become a New Yorker.

The 3-to-4-month-old male cub was rescued two weeks ago by hunters who say they unwittingly shot the bear's mother near Point Lay, Alaska, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The bear has been called Kali (the Inupiat name for Point Lay) and is being cared for at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage but will be sent to the Buffalo Zoo later this spring, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced last week.

In Buffalo, Kali (pronounced "Cully") will be raised alongside a 4-month-old female polar bear cub nicknamed Luna, whose mom Anana was having trouble taking care of her. Letting the two cubs interact and play together could help ensure that they don't get too attached to their human keepers.

"At the Buffalo Zoo, both cubs would benefit from each other's company during this important period in their development," Randi Meyerson, coordinator of the Polar Bear Species Survival Plan, said in a statement. "Peer-raising animals is generally preferred over human-rearing whenever possible."

Buffalo might only be a temporary home for Kali; officials are considering the Saint Louis Zoo as a final destination for the bear.

"We recognize that the Saint Louis Zoo is in the process of building a state-of-the-art polar bear exhibit expected to be completed in 2015," Dan Ashe, director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, said in a statement. "Our goal is to work with the Zoo to ensure the proper standards of care are met for the polar bears who will eventually find a home in Saint Louis."

The polar bear is the largest species of bear on the planet. An adult male weighs between 775 and 1,200 pounds (351 and 544 kilograms) and will reach its full adult size between the ages of 8 and 14 years. Adult females are half the size of their male counterparts ? 330 to 650 pounds (50 to 295 kg) ? and reach full size at around age 5 to 6 years. Polar bears in captivity typically live into their 30s.

In the wild, polar bears are found in Russia, Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Norway's Svalbard archipelago, and the animals are threatened by declining Arctic sea ice, oil development, pollutants and hunting. In May 2008, United States listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, while in Canada and Russia they are listed as a species of special concern.

In interview, Sandusky speaks of Paterno, witness

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky said in interview excerpts broadcast Monday that a key witness against him misinterpreted him showering with a young boy in Penn State football team facilities more than a decade ago.

Sandusky told documentary filmmaker John Ziegler, in recordings played on NBC's "Today" show, that he does not understand how Mike McQueary concluded "that sex was going on" when he witnessed Sandusky showering with a boy in 2001.

"That would have been the last thing I would have thought about," Sandusky said during what Ziegler described as 3? hours of interviews. "I would have thought maybe fooling around or something like that."

McQueary, a graduate assistant in 2001, testified at trial that he heard "skin-on-skin smacking sound" and had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex.

The boy, identified as Victim 2 in court records, was not a witness at trial. A team of civil lawyers has said they are representing Victim 2 and posted online audio recordings of voicemails purportedly from Sandusky and left for the boy.

Sandusky also told Ziegler he was not sure whether head coach Joe Paterno, who was fired after Sandusky's November 2011 arrest, would have let him keep coaching if he suspected Sandusky was a pedophile. Sandusky was investigated by university police for a separate shower incident in 1998, but remained one of Paterno's top assistants through 1999.

"If he absolutely thought I was, I'd say no," Sandusky said. "If he had a suspicion, I don't know the answer to that."

Ziegler is working on a defense of Paterno. Wick Sollers, a Paterno family lawyer, said in a statement released Sunday that Sandusky had an opportunity to testify at trial but "chose not to do so."

Sandusky, 69, is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence after being convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence and is pursuing appeals.

Family, friends welcome soldiers home from Afghanistan - The Gazette

It has been a rough several months being married to Capt. Hoffman.

While the Army veterinarian supported coalition forces in Afghanistan, there was plenty of work to be done at home.

    There were baths to give.

    Bedtimes to enforce.

Laundry, dishes and cooking to do.

?I definitely have a new respect for stay-at-home moms,? said Jon Hoffman, husband of Capt. Diana Hoffman and stay-at-home dad to Sebastian, 2, and Theodore, 1.

Diana Hoffman was among 50 Fort Carson soldiers who returned home Thursday evening after nine months in Afghanistan.

See a slideshow of the homecoming here.

The soldiers, with the 438th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services, deployed in June. They spent their time providing services such as food inspection and preventative veterinary medicine throughout the southwestern portion of the country.

Although Diana Hoffman has been in the Army for most of the couple?s seven-year marriage, the deployment was the couple?s first.

?And hopefully our last,? said a weary-looking Jon Hoffman as he kept a watchful eye on each toddler before the ceremony. ?I missed my spouse on multiple levels. It?s the little things. She wasn?t here for bath time, breaks for me.?

?Nap time is fun,? he added with a grin.

The returning unit inspected food for personnel at 130 forward operating bases and combat outposts and serviced 700 contract and military working dogs during 2,100 appointments, said Col. James Andrews, commander of the 10th Combat Support Hospital.

The soldiers also supported the medevacs of 35 working dogs, he said.

?The list keeps going on and on, and I can?t tell you how proud of you I am,? Andrews told the soldiers.

Waiting for his wife at Thursday?s ceremony was another Mr. Mom: Staff Sgt. Spencer Anderson II, an Army flight medic and father of two.

He held a bouquet of pale pink roses as he waited for his wife, Staff Sgt. Lorena Anderson.

Spencer Anderson has experienced both sides of deployment: at home waiting for his wife and a 15-month deployment to Iraq.

Those waiting at home have the tougher job, he said.

?When you?re there, you don?t have a lot of time to think,? he said. ?When you?re here, you?re home doing laundry, paying bills. You have time to think.

?The house has been really lonely without her,? he added. ?I?m looking forward to having a lively home.?

After the call of ?dismissed,? Jon and Diana Hoffman spent their first few reunited moments playing with their children and fighting back tears.

Sebastian handed his soldier mom a bouquet of bright orange flowers.

    They sniffed them together.

    She kissed his ear.

    Then she sobbed.

Leaving her boys was ?the hardest thing I?ve ever had to do in my life,? she said.

?I?m done being a soldier for a while,? she said. ?It?s time to be a mom.?

SpaceX's next-generation rocket engine cleared for liftoff this summer

    SpaceX

Two of SpaceX's Merlin 1D engines sit on a test stand at the company's rocket development facility in Texas.

    By Mike Wall
    Space.com

SpaceX's next-generation rocket engine is ready to fly and will probably power a commercial space launch for the first time this summer, company officials announced Wednesday.

The Merlin 1D engine was judged flight-ready after firing for a total of nearly 33 minutes over the course of 28 different tests at SpaceX's rocket-development facility in McGregor, Texas. The new engine will soon be incorporated into the company's?Falcon 9 rocket, officials said.

"The Merlin 1D successfully performed every test throughout this extremely rigorous qualification program,"?SpaceX's?CEO and chief designer, Elon Musk, said in a statement. "With flight qualification now complete, we look forward to flying the first Merlin 1D engines on Falcon 9?s Flight 6 this year."

The Falcon 9 has flown five times to date, most recently on March 1, when it blasted the robotic Dragon capsule toward the International Space Station on California-based SpaceX's second contracted supply run for NASA. According to the company's launch manifest, flight No. 6 will launch a Canadian communications satellite, probably in mid-June. [Photos: SpaceX's Amazing Rockets & Spaceships]

Company officials say the Merlin 1D will provide a big boost for the Falcon 9, which has been using nine Merlin 1C engines to power its first stage.

"The Merlin 1D has a vacuum thrust-to-weight ratio exceeding 150, the best of any liquid rocket engine in history," SpaceX officials wrote in a press release Wednesday. "This enhanced design makes the Merlin 1D the most efficient booster engine ever built, while still maintaining the structural and thermal safety margins needed to carry astronauts."

SpaceX indeed plans to launch astronauts using the Merlin 1D. The company is working on a manned version of its Falcon 9/Dragon transportation system, in the hopes of scoring a NASA contract to ferry astronauts to and from the space station.

SpaceX will also incorporate the 1D into its Falcon Heavy booster, a huge rocket still in development that will use 27 engines in its first stage. The Falcon Heavy will be capable of carrying payloads weighing 53 metric tons to low-Earth orbit, company officials say, and it is also being designed to meet NASA human-rating standards.

The Merlin 1D already powers SpaceX's?Grasshopper rocket, an experimental booster that the company hopes will pave the way for a fully reusable launch system. Earlier this month, the Grasshopper lifted off on its fourth test flight, rising 263 feet (80 meters) into the Texas skies before returning to Earth and making a soft landing.

StreamGuys And AdsWizz Monetize Internet Radio for All Classical ...

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA ? All Classical Portland, an independent, non-profit radio station with an FM presence in several Oregon markets, this year celebrates its 30th?anniversary on the air.? However, the pure-format Classical station ? one of the few of its kind remaining ? is not resting on its over-the-air laurels.

Streaming media and its monetization is top of mind for Director of New Media Alexander Bighill, who joined All Classical Portland in 2011.? Bighill has since expanded to eight streams using StreamGuys? cloud-based streaming architecture.? Online and mobile listeners can choose from two AAC+ and two MP3 streams, further supported with redundant streams via StreamGuys? robust architecture.

Most recently, the station has added AdsWizz?s Digital Advertising Monetization Platform for audio pre-roll injections.? StreamGuys offers the AdsWizz platform as an integrated service for broadcasters and audio publishers seeking to generate revenue and monetize streams through targeted content delivery.

?We have a strong sense of place and love the music we play. ?We?re passionate about sharing this with the rest of the world, and StreamGuys helped us increase online listenership with the reliability of its global infrastructure,? said Bighill.? ?Online streaming can be fun and exciting, but sometimes that?s not enough of a reason to justify the money that goes into the technology.? StreamGuys recommended AdsWizz when it came time to directly monetize our streams.?

Bighill reports that the AdsWizz service is reliable and hassle-free, with new audio files added to the pre-roll rotations over a simple user interface.? The station is approaching ad insertion with simplicity to start, injecting in-house-produced pre-rolls as users initiate streams.? Bighill expects pre-roll sales to escalate as more listeners and businesses become familiar with the service.

All Classical Portland also utilizes business software from both companies to strategize future growth opportunities.? This includes StreamGuys? SGMon and SGReports analytical tools, with the former producing weekly listenership overviews for comparison to Arbitron terrestrial audience reports.? Bighill adds that SGReports offers ?an insane amount of detail? about when and how listeners tune in.? AdsWizz brings additional value with pertinent information on pre-roll impressions.

His overall impression is that streaming media is vital to the public media space, and that it?s time to take advantage of robust, multi-format delivery and cutting-edge technologies such as the AdsWizz platform.

?It should be no surprise that internet-based media is more than a fad,? said Bighill.? ?The ability to deliver our broadcast worldwide is a huge advantage because the ratio of terrestrial listeners versus online listeners will inevitably continue to shift.? To help offset technological investments, new ways of generating revenue are also needed.? The average internet user realizes that a 10-second message is preferable to a subscription service, and that?s where services like AdsWizz are helpful.?

    About AdsWizz

Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, lack of genetic counseling, screening may play a role

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues in Canada have published study results focused on black women younger than 50, a population disproportionately afflicted with and dying from early-onset breast cancer compared to their white counterparts. The research published in the Jan. 16 issue of The Breast Journal.

Early-onset breast cancer has been associated with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These breast cancer predisposing genes were discovered almost 20 years ago and confer a lifetime risk of breast cancer of 60 to 70 percent, as well as a much higher risk of a second primary breast cancer compared to noncarriers. The researchers suggest that genetic counseling and BRCA testing can reduce cancer incidence and mortality in those identified with mutations.

"We need to better understand why black women develop early-onset, aggressive disease," said study co-author Tuya Pal, M.D., associate member of the Cancer Epidemiology Program at Moffitt. "More research may be needed to help us develop strategies to reduce this disparity."

According to prior studies, few young black women undergo genetic testing, despite the known association between BRCA mutations and breast cancer. And when black women develop breast cancer, their family history and financial status may influence their treatment choices, such as bilateral mastectomy surgery to prevent future cancer.

"Black women continue to be underrepresented in studies of the genetic causes of breast cancer," said study co-author Susan T. Vadaparampil, Ph.D., M.P.H., a behavioral scientist in the Health Outcomes and Behavior Program at Moffitt. "However, our efforts in the state of Florida demonstrate that these women are willing to participate in studies focused on the genetic causes of cancer."

Their study, carried out using the Florida state cancer registry, surveyed black women 50 and younger with breast cancer who resided in one of four Florida counties between 2005 and 2006 and conducted BRCA testing in 46 participants.

Participants and nonparticipants were similar in clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, suggesting that a representative sample was recruited, enhancing the generalizability of findings, the researchers reported. All participants received telephone-based pre-test genetic counseling during which a three-generation family history was generated.

"Through our study, we determined that 34 participants met national guidelines for BRCA testing, but only 13 reported that their health care providers referred them for genetic counseling and/or testing," Pal said. "A genetic evaluation is important in at-risk women, and is important for decision-making in the pre-surgical setting for patients, due to the high risk for second primary breast cancer in those with BRCA mutations."

Analysis also found that among BRCA mutation carriers, there was an association between those who chose bilateral mastectomy and with those with a family history of breast cancer and higher household income. The researchers noted that the association between bilateral mastectomy and family history suggests that genetic information may be considered by patients and providers when deciding on type of surgery, despite lack of referral for genetic counseling and consideration of BRCA testing. Interestingly, said the researchers, bilateral mastectomy was more common in those with higher incomes, and further study into this association is warranted.

"Our study found that the BRCA mutation prevalence in younger black women is similar to previous studies, yet our findings demonstrated that the majority are not referred for genetic counseling and/or BRCA testing, despite most meeting national practice guidelines for BRCA testing," Vadaparampil said. "This may represent a missed clinical opportunity."

The researchers have used their study as the foundation for additional outreach, education and research efforts by the research team and their community partners. This research has also helped the study authors secure additional grants to conduct a larger Florida-wide study focused on young black women, examine the impact of genetic counseling and testing on quality of life in participants, and promote awareness of inherited breast cancer in black women throughout Florida and beyond. As part of these efforts, a culturally targeted brochure designed to increase awareness about inherited breast cancer has been developed and sent to more than 15,000 women.

Have only played around in one virtual world and have no experience in text role play. I'm not entirely certain where I will fit in as I'm not familiar with the Dr Who's of the world.

I'm hoping to find a realistic roleplay if that makes sense? I can be very active as I am never separated from my phone! Thanks for listening and feel free to contact me anytime.

Mexico weighing new euro bond issue after three year gap: debt chief

    PANAMA CITY | Sat Mar 16, 2013 12:48pm EDT

PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - Mexico is considering issuing a new euro bond after a recent improvement in European market conditions, debt chief Alejandro Diaz de Leon said on Saturday.

Mexican officials will visit Europe next week to bring investors up to date on the new government's plans for structural reforms and test the appetite for a new issue, he said on the sidelines of an Inter-American Development Bank meeting in Panama.

"It depends a bit on the outcome of the meetings; what's clear is that a market which did not look very attractive to us 12 months ago, 18 months ago, now the levels are different and it is becoming attractive again," he told Reuters.

The euro swap curve had come down while the yields on U.S. bonds were increasing.

"At the end of the day you can't pre-empt what will happen but for us it's important to talk to investors," he said.

Mexico last issued debt in euros in mid-2010, when it placed 850 million euros in seven-year bonds, according to Thomson Reuters service IFR, which said Diaz de Leon would visit the Britain, France, Germany and the Netherlands between March 18 and March 20.

Diaz de Leon said although officials were continually looking at the possibility of issuing debt in dollars and yen as well, they did not have other overseas trips planned in the short term.

Latin America's second biggest economy issued about $5 billion of new foreign currency debt in 2012, including a landmark unsecured yen bond worth about $1 billion. Strong demand helped Mexico clinch record low interest rates.

Mexico's Congress has approved foreign currency debt issues of up to $7 billion for 2013.

Argentines celebrate Francis as their 'slum pope'

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? For more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide, he's Pope Francis. For Argentina's poorest citizens, crowded in "misery villages" throughout the capital, he's proudly known as one of their own, a true "slum pope."

Villa 21-24 is a slum so dangerous that most outsiders don't dare enter, but residents say Jorge Mario Bergoglio often showed up unannounced to share laughs and sips of mate, the traditional Argentine herbal tea shared by groups using a common straw.

People here recall how the Buenos Aires archbishop ditched a limousine and would arrive on a bus to their little chapel; how he sponsored marathons and carpentry classes, consoled single mothers and washed the feet of recovering drug addicts; how he became one of them.

"Four years ago, I was at my worst and I needed help. When the Mass started he knelt down and washed my feet. It hit me hard. It was such a beautiful experience," said Cristian Marcelo Reynoso, 27, a garbage collector trying to kick a cocaine addiction through the church's rehab program.

"When I saw the news on the TV, I began screaming with joy, and look, I'm still trembling," Reynoso said. "El Chabon (The Dude) is so humble. He's a fan of San Lorenzo (the soccer club), like me. You talk to him like a friend."

Long after he became a cardinal in 2001, this "prince of the church" wore a simple black T-shirt with a white collar. For many at the slum's Caacupe Virgin of the Miracles Church, it's nothing short of a miracle that their friend is the pope.

"He was always part of our slum," housewife Lidia Valdivieso, 41, said after praying while resting her palm on a statue of St. Expeditus, patron saint of urgent and impossible causes. Her 23-year-old son has cerebral palsy and is learning carpentry at the church's technical school.

"When I heard the news I couldn't believe it. Having a 'papa villero' (slum pope) is the most beautiful thing that can happen to us. I still remember him going on long walks through our muddy streets or talking to our children," Valdivieso said.

Inside the concrete block chapel, there's a painted message commemorating Bergoglio's inauguration, and another big painting of Pope John Paul II, but no sign of Benedict XVI whatsoever. Near the altar, there's a large black-and-white poster of Carlos Mugica, an iconic Argentine slum priest who was killed in 1974 by a right-wing death squad intent on eliminating the "liberation theology" he preached.

Bergoglio never favored liberation theology because of its alliances with armed leftist guerrilla movements in the 1970s. But he has done much to follow in Mugica's footsteps, sponsoring all sorts of outreach programs in Argentina's slums.

This can be messy work, obliging priests to challenge drug dealers for the slum-dwellers' allegiances, and putting their beliefs, even their lives, at risk. Sometimes compromises must be made.

Just a few steps from the chapel, melted candles stand in a red shrine to the pagan folk hero Antonio "Gauchito" Gil, a 19th century outlaw revered among Argentina's poor for sharing his stolen bounty with the poor.

Many Argentines are as likely to pray for miracles from "Gauchito" as they are from authorized Catholic saints, but Bergoglio didn't object to the shrine's presence next to his chapel.

"For more than 20 years he came here. He's always been close to us and his impact on this slum is huge," said the parish priest, Lorenzo "Toto" de Vedia.

Cameras followed Bergoglio once as he washed the feet of 12 young men at a rehab center. "Then he kept coming back, taking confession and counseling them," Vedia said. On the priest's desk lay a newspaper with a huge, one-word headline: "FRANCISCO."

"You can tell that the church is going to change," Vedia said. "The fact that he chose the name Francisco says it all. It says: 'Let's stop messing around and devote ourselves to the poor.' That was St. Francis* message and now 'Francisco' can live it."

In his first appearance at St. Peter's Square, the first Latin American pope bowed to the crowds and asked for their blessing. Back in Argentina, his friends in the slums recognized the gesture as the same sort of humility that won their hearts.

In the 13th century, St. Francis of Assisi made it his mission to respond to the poor and show that through simplicity and love, a stronger foundation for the church could be built.

Pope Francis' "mission is now to go on a pilgrimage to all lands, to walk with the people, to lead a church that walks," said Mercedes Trovato, 24, a youth volunteer who wore a wooden cross around her neck.

The pope's sister, Maria Elena Bergoglio, said she is very confident that the pomp and protocol of the Vatican won't dent his lifelong humility. His message to Argentines to spend their money on charities instead of for trips to Rome to see his installation in the Vatican on Tuesday is a strong sign that he won't change, she said.

"That message ... makes me feel like he is still on the same path, that he hasn't been affected ? for the moment, at least," she said in an interview with The Associated Press at her home 25 miles west of downtown Buenos Aires. "There is no worse poison than power."

She added that her brother's preference "is for the poor, the weakest, the old, children."

"He has a clear preference for the poor," she said.

Nor did he ever express a desire to become pope, she said. "We would challenge him about it and he would say, 'Oh, please!'"

Bergoglio's friends say he's fundamentally shy. He hardly ever grants media interviews, preferring to speak from the pulpit. But he did agree to chat recently with Jaidr Flores, a 22-year-old host on the parish's Radio FM La 96.

"He was hesitant at first. But I convinced him, and at the end of the interview, he started laughing and said: "You did it! You got me on air!'" said Flores. "One day I went to visit him at his office and I was amazed to see how many pictures of the volunteers and recovered drug addicts from this community he had on his desk. He truly cares for us."

Jane Buckingham: Four Seconds of Fame

Here's the story of how over two weeks, a "nobody" went from 10 to 100 to 10,000 followers on Instagram, having two fan pages, and a social media stalker.

And I'm not proud to admit that the story is about my nine-year-old daughter.

Rightly or wrongly, I've subscribed to the notion that when it comes to the wild world of the Internet and social media, I want my kids to experience, and make their mistakes when they are young -- and their transgressions relatively small. As someone whose business has been in watching trends for over 20 years, I've observed with a combination of a trained sociologist and the wariness of a young parent the explosion of a new digital world. I have eased sighs of relief as my children tried out Kik, Snap Chat, Moshi Monsters and other "kid" based apps and sites to no issue under my watchful eye.

But even as a predictor of the future, I wasn't ready for the speed at which Instagram would catch fire, and before one could apply a photo filter, over one million tweens joined the service in July 2012 alone (according to Nielsen). So when my kids wanted to join, I allowed them, carefully outlining the types of photos they should post, never to tag friends who weren't allowed on, and to let me know of anything untoward or inappropriate on there. Everything was fine.

And then my daughter got "famous."

Well, lets be clear, not famous, just... Internet famous. My daughter is a very good dancer, extremely flexible and adorable. And she is one of a tremendous number of tweens who follow the show Dance Moms as if it were a marathon One Direction concert. If you're not familiar with the fervor with which this show is received, you should check out any one of its' talented tween stars Instagrams. Each has 300,0000 to over 500,000 followers and countless fan sites. Because of my business, I wound up meeting and working with some the cast. They couldn't have been sweeter to my daughter, and they became friends. And as many group of friends today do, the girls posted photos with my daughter. Thus, the frenzy began. Rumors started swirling whether my daughter was the newest cast member? Was related to the girls? Or why she was suddenly all over their feeds. No matter how much my daughter, her brother, or the girls themselves denied it, the interest in Lilia grew. Over night she had over 2,000 new followers. By the end of the week, she had two fan pages. (FAN PAGES??!!!) and even the video I had posted on YouTube for her grandmother in London to see was getting "favorited."

By the second week, she had endless requests to release her (nonexistent) Kik, girls begging to be her best friend, and countless pleas for replies. And that weekend, she received a call and texts from a "fan" who increasingly became frustrated that Lilia would not respond, and threatened to release her number (How she even got it remains a mystery).

So a girl, who did nothing, was not on a show, was not in the public eye, and was just your normal kid suddenly had fans and a stalker?

Today, tweens, and frankly all of us, are looking for cues of what to pay attention to . We are so eager to find the next trend, and be the first to discover it that we will jump on anything with heat, only to discover that not only does the emperor have no clothes, but he has no followers. Tweens today have to navigate not only the struggles of getting older, but learning to discern fact from fiction in a world that few of us can truly decipher.

Another friend told me that her daughter felt her friendships had become threatened, and competitive. If two girls were off together and posting photos, two more of the group would feel the need to show that they were having a better time. Besties and BFFL's were used like currency, and birthdays became an occasion to see who could post a longer "friendship love letter" and if the use of each emoticons cost money, we'd all be bankrupt by now.

Just as I was ready to shut it all down, my daughter decided to pull herself off. Though, as you can't actually delete an Instagram account, she simply decided to stop posting. I can do nothing about her fan pages, who to this day remain loyal and scour the internet for photos I didn't even know existed on line.

We suggested that she could create a new account, keep it private, and accept only her close friend. But she decided not to. As she said, "I think I'm too addicted to it, I don't need it or want it." There was no better lesson we could have taught her, or ourselves.

PFT: Agent says Ellerbe got quick interest

    boldGetty Images

Last month, Ravens receiver Anquan Boldin told Pro Football Talk that, if he?s cut by the Ravens, he?ll retire.

?Once a Raven, always a Raven,? he added.

He may no longer be a Raven.

According to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, Boldin has rejected the team?s proposal to reduce his $6 million base salary.? The veteran is prepared to become an unrestricted free agent, if/when he is cut.

In hindsight, Boldin perhaps shouldn?t have said he?ll retire if he?s cut.? That comment surely emboldened the Ravens to take a run at creating some cap space by backing him into a corner.

At the Scouting Combine, Ravens assistant G.M. Eric DeCosta told Pro Football Talk, ?Anquan?s a Raven.?? Asked whether he?ll be a Raven at a base salary of $6 million, DeCosta said, ?We?ll see.?

The answer is, for now, no.? Once the Ravens realize that Boldin is serious about playing elsewhere, the answer could change to yes.

New fish species described from the streams of Manyas Lake basin, Turkey

Mar. 8, 2013 ? The newly described species Alburnoides manyasensis, belongs the large carp family Cyprinidae that includes freshwater fishes such as he carps, the minnows, and their relatives. This is the largest fish family, and more notably the largest family of vertebrate animals, with the remarkable numbers of over 2,400 species. Cyprinids are highly important food fish because they make the largest part of biomass in most water types except for fast-flowing rivers.

The genus Alburnoides is widely distributed in Turkey in rivers and streams of basins of the Marmara, Black and Aegean seas, being absent only from the Mediterranean Sea basin. It is distinguished by small black spots located on each side of the fish, especially prominent on the anterior of the body. The description was published in the open access journal Zookeys.

Alburnoides manyasensisis is described from the Koca Stream drainage of Lake Manyas, Marmara Sea basin in Anatolia and is currently only associated with this specific locality. The name of the species is an adjective that is derived from the name of Lake Manyas to which the new species is possibly endemic.

The new species inhabits clear fast running water with cobble and pebble substrates. It is a comparatively small representative of the family with maximum known body length of only 92 cm while the largest representative of the family, the giant barb (Catlocarpio siamensis) can reach up to the astonishing 3 m in length.
