County taking applications for 120 part-time bus driver jobs

Miami-Dade Transit is looking for part-time bus drivers now that some veteran full-time bus drivers are being trained to become Metrorail operators for the forthcoming elevated train line to Miami International Airport.

According to an MDT statement, people interested in the job can fill out an application via online at www.miamidade.gov/jobs through Tuesday.

?Those who are selected can earn as they learn,? the MDT statement said. ?Bus operator trainees earn $14.71 per hour, and continue gaining experience as part-time bus operators.?

By this spring, Metrorail is scheduled to begin operating its new line from the current Earlington Heights station to the massive public transportation hub known as the Miami Intermodal Center, which is being built just east of MIA.

MDT said it plans to hire 120 part-time bus drivers. MDT currently has 262 part-timers and 1,372 full-timers to drive its 822 buses.

To be selected, applicants must pass a background check and physical exam. They also must have a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED), a photo identification such as a Florida driver?s license, and proof of having passed the general knowledge, air-brake and passenger transport sections of the commercial driver license exam.

Those interested in applying can also obtain information by calling the Miami-Dade County Job Information Hot Line at 305-375-5627 or by visiting a South Florida Workforce One-Stop Career Center. Those without Internet access can use a computer at a public library.

Scientists discover a brain cell malfunction in schizophrenia

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have discovered that DNA stays too tightly wound in certain brain cells of schizophrenic subjects.

The findings suggest that drugs already in development for other diseases might eventually offer hope as a treatment for schizophrenia and related conditions in the elderly.

The research, now available online in the new Nature journal, Translational Psychiatry, shows the deficit is especially pronounced in younger people, meaning treatment might be most effective early on at minimizing or even reversing symptoms of schizophrenia, a potentially devastating mental disorder associated with hallucinations, delusions, and emotional difficulties, among other problems.

"We're excited by the findings," said Scripps Research Associate Professor Elizabeth Thomas, a neuroscientist who led the study, "and there's a tie to other drug development work, which could mean a faster track to clinical trials to exploit what we've found."

A Promising New Field

Over the past few years, researchers have increasingly recognized that cellular-level changes not tied to genetic defects play important roles in causing disease. There is a range of such so-called epigenetic effects that change the way DNA functions without changing a person's DNA code.

One critical area of epigenetic research is tied to histones. These are the structural proteins that DNA has to wrap around. "There's so much DNA in each cell of your body that it could never fit in your cells unless it was tightly and efficiently packed," said Thomas. Histone "tails" regularly undergo chemical modifications to either relax the DNA or repack it. When histones are acetylated, portions of DNA are exposed so that the genes can be used. The histone-DNA complexes, known as chromatin, are constantly relaxing and condensing to expose different genes, so there is no single right or wrong configuration. But the balance can shift in ways that can cause or exacerbate disease.

DNA is the guide that cellular machinery uses to construct the countless proteins essential to life. If portions of that guide remain closed when they shouldn't because histones are not acetylated properly, then genes can be effectively turned off when they shouldn't be with any number of detrimental effects. Numerous research groups have found that altered acetylation may be a key factor in other conditions, from neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease to drug addiction.

A Good Idea

Thomas had been studying the roles of histone acetylation in Huntington's disease and began to wonder whether similar mechanisms of gene regulation might also be important in schizophrenia. In both diseases, past research in the Thomas lab had shown that certain genes in sufferers were much less active than in healthy people. "It occurred to me that we see the same gene alterations, so I thought, 'Hey, let's just try it,'" she said.

Working with lead author Bin Tang, a postdoctoral fellow in her lab, and Brian Dean, an Australian colleague at the University of Melbourne, Thomas obtained post-mortem brain samples from schizophrenic and healthy brains held at medical "Brain Banks" in the United States and Australia. The brains come from either patients who themselves agreed to donate some or all of their bodies for scientific research after death, or from patients whose families agreed to such donations.

A great deal of epigenetic research has focused on chemical alterations to DNA itself. Histone alterations have been much more difficult to study because such research requires that the histones and DNA remain chemically intact. Many researchers feared that these bonds were disrupted in the brain after death. However, Thomas's group was able to develop a technique for maintaining the histone-DNA interactions. "While many people thought this was lost, we were able to show that indeed these interactions are preserved in post-mortem brain, allowing us to carry out these studies," said Thomas.

Compared to healthy brains, the brain samples from subjects with schizophrenia showed lower levels of acetylation in certain histone portions that would block gene expression. Another critical finding was that in younger subjects with schizophrenia, the problem was much more pronounced.

Need for New Treatment Options

Just what causes the acetylation defects among schizophrenic subjects?what keeps certain pages of the DNA guide closed?isn't clear, but from a medical perspective it doesn't matter. If researchers can reliably show that acetylation is a cause of the problem, they can look for ways to open the closed guide pages and hopefully cure or improve the condition in patients.

Thomas sees great potential. Based on the more pronounced results in younger brains, she believes that treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors might well prove helpful in reversing or preventing the progression of the condition, especially in younger patients. Current drugs for schizophrenia tend to treat only certain symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, and the drugs have major side effects including movement problems, weight gain, and diabetes. If deacetylase inhibitors effectively treat a root cause of the disease and prove sufficiently non-toxic, they might improve additional symptoms and provide a major expansion of treatment options.

Interestingly, some of the cognitive deficits that plague elderly people look quite similar biologically to schizophrenia, and the two conditions share at least some brain abnormalities. So deacetylase inhibitors might also work as a treatment for age-related problems, and might even prove an effective preventive measure for people at high risk of cognitive decline based on family history or other indicators.

###

This study, "Disease- and age-related changes in histone acetylation at gene promoters in psychiatric disorders," was supported by the National Institutes of Health. Samples were provided by the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center, and Australia's Victorian Brain Bank Network. Court upholds rapper C-Murder's 2009 murder conviction (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A Louisiana appeals court this week upheld the 2009 murder conviction of Corey Miller, the rap artist who recorded and performed under the name C-Murder.

Miller was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison two years ago for the 2002 killing of a 16-year-old fan at a nightclub in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Miller appealed the verdict, saying he had been denied a fair trial because the judge had allowed prosecutors to share "prejudicial and unsubstantiated" testimony with the jurors, including claims that Miller had threatened witnesses in the case.

Miller also alleged that prosecutors "systematically eliminated black people from the jury" and that the judge should have declared a mistrial when the jury indicated at one point that it was could not reach a verdict.

The deadlock was eventually broken and 10 members of the 12-person jury convicted Miller of second degree murder.

On Wednesday, a three-judge appeals court panel upheld the conviction and Miller's life sentence.

The ruling was filed on Thursday with the clerk of Louisiana's Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal.

Kahne takes flak after breastfeeding rant on Twitter

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne hasn?t gotten this kind of attention on the Internet since his brief encounter with Paris Hilton at an L.A. night club in 2009.

That was when Hilton, the hotel/resort heiress/reality TV and so on star, reportedly ventured that Kahne, winner of 12 races at NASCAR?s top level, was ?cute.?

But the sentiments being expressed now aren?t quite as complimentary after Kahne ranted on Twitter about breastfeeding in public. The more recent encounter reportedly took place at a grocery store and has prompted hundreds of responses ? ranging from supportive to outrage.

In a series of Tweets, huffingtonpost.com reported, the 31-year-old driver said the sight caused him to lose his appetite and his desire to continue shopping.

According to mediate.com, Kahne removed at least two of the remarks by Wednesday morning, but not before posting something less than flattering about the upset mother, who had proposed that Kahne reconsider his remarks.

In the 2012 season, Kahne will drive for NASCAR's most successful team, Hendrick Motorsports.

Texas schools are allowing more lessons on birth control

A shift is occurring in Texas as more school districts move from abstinence-only programs to a comprehensive approach that teaches about condoms and other contraceptives, according to an advocacy group's study of state data.

In 2007, about 4 percent of the state's school districts used comprehensive programs, according to a study by the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund, a research group that supports the comprehensive approach known as abstinence-plus. A more recent analysis, based on data from a Texas Education Agency health education survey, found that nearly 25 percent of school districts had abstinence-plus programs in 2010.

"That's a huge increase in a three-year period," said Kathy Miller, president of the education fund. "The quiet revolution is taking place at the local level."

TEA says the group's research is probably accurate. The agency "is seeing a little bit of movement" based on anecdotal information, said TEA spokeswoman Debbie Ratcliffe.

Abstinence-plus advocates say school officials, backed by parents, can see that what they've been doing isn't reducing teen pregnancies. Abstinence-only supporters counter that a decline in state teen birth rates shows that abstinence-only are effective.

Recent state and local studies show that most parents, as well as the general public, favor a more balanced approach.

Income level a factor

In Harris County, 93 percent of parents support school-based sex education, and about 70 percent support abstinence-plus programs in middle school or earlier, according a study by the Prevention Research Center at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston. National studies have shown similar results.

The state's teen birth rates are down over the last decade, but remain higher than the national rate.

Texas has the third highest rate - 63 per 1,000 births - for girls 15 to 19, and the second highest rate of multiple births for girls 15 to 19. Ten percent of sixth-graders have had sex, and by 12th grade 70 percent of teens have had sex, translating to more than 800,000 sexually experienced teens in Texas, the research center found.

Harris County's teen birth rate is the same as the state's. A map developed by the research center shows that numerous areas in the county have birth rates well above the national and state averages.

Socioeconomic factors have a lot to do with the varying rates. Low-income areas have less access to clinics and contraceptives, researchers said.

Changes in funding

National studies, including a 2007 study mandated by Congress, have shown that abstinence-only programs do not stop teens from having sex, research center director Susan Tortolero said. But federal funding over the past decade has supported abstinence-only programs, and Texas has led the nation in receiving those dollars.

That might change under President Barack Obama, who has poured more federal money into evidence-based, abstinence-plus programs.

Nationally, about one-third of schools teach abstinence-only, about one-third have comprehensive programs, and one-third do not teach sex education at all, according to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States.

Contraceptive research

Jonathan Saenz, director of legislative affairs for Liberty Institute, an Austin-based religious rights organization, says there's no proof that evidence-based programs work better than abstinence-only programs.

"When it comes to teaching about smoking, we don't give them a cigarette and tell them to puff less," Saenz said. "We tell them what we know: They should never do it. School children deserve more focus on the method that works 100 percent of the time, and nothing less."

Saenz said he fears teen pregnancies will go up dramatically if more schools ditch the abstinence-only approach. But research shows U.S. teen birth rates have declined mostly because of increased use of contraceptives and more reliable contraceptives.

Texas doesn't require schools to teach sex education. If they do, Texas Education Code says they may mention condoms and contraceptives, but must emphasize abstinence until marriage. The result has been inconsistent approaches across the state.

Both sides agree that the best education starts at home, and that working with parents is part of the solution.

New program spreading

About seven years ago, the research center began developing a federally funded, evidence-based abstinence-plus program for middle school students; it's now in 10 school districts, reaching more than 20,000 students.

School districts are required to have health advisory councils, made up of parents, educators and public health experts. The councils make recommendations to school boards on appropriate instruction at various grade levels for human sexuality education.

Houston ISD has taught abstinence-plus for some time, using a curriculum developed by staff, said district officials. Its approach is based on data from the biannual Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in middle and high schools.

Berkshire completes Omaha World-Herald deal

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has completed the purchase of company chairman Warren Buffett's hometown newspaper, the Omaha World-Herald.

The deal announced Nov. 30, for $150 million and the assumption of $50 million in debt, ended one of the newspaper industry's last sizable employee-ownership plans.

World-Herald spokesman Joel Long said Monday that the deal closed Friday. World-Herald shareholders ? about 275 employees and retirees and the Peter Kiewit Foundation ? approved the sale by an overwhelming vote, Long said. The amount employees received for each of their shares, which are not publicly traded, wasn't disclosed.

Under the agreement, Berkshire acquires the flagship World-Herald and daily newspapers in Kearney, Grand Island, York, North Platte and Scottsbluff in Nebraska; the Council Bluffs Nonpareil in Iowa; a number of weekly newspapers in the region; and World Marketing, a direct-mail company with operations in Omaha, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

Buffett, who is Berkshire's chairman and chief executive, had said he probably wouldn't increase Berkshire's newspaper holdings because of the industry's dwindling returns. Berkshire owns the Buffalo News and it has a sizable investment in the Washington Post Co.

But during a meeting with World-Herald shareholders, he said: "I wouldn't do this if I thought this was doomed to some sort of extinction."

The Omaha World-Herald Co. has about 1,600 employees, including about 650 at the flagship newspaper in Omaha. Its daily circulation is just over 135,000 and a Sunday circulation of a little over 170,000.

World-Herald CEO Terry Kroeger said when the deal was announced that the company's employee-ownership structure was restrictive and had forced the newspaper to repurchase stock from departing employees.

Buffett promised to stay out of editorial decisions at the World-Herald Co.'s newspapers. Berkshire Hathaway usually doesn't make major changes at the companies it buys. Instead, Buffett likes buying well-run companies, allowing them to continue operating in their fashion.

When the deal was announced, Buffett said the World-Herald "delivers solid profits and is one of the best-run newspapers in America."

Berkshire owns more than 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, insurance, furniture, utility, jewelry and corporate jet companies. It also has big investments in companies including Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

LogMeIn remote desktop app goes free on iPhone and iPad

Looks like LogMeIn Inc. has suddenly cottoned on to the freemium business model, deciding to offer its basic remote desktop app for iPhone and iPad entirely gratis. Previously, you had to hand over $29.99 for the simple pleasure of accessing your PC and Mac desktops via LogMeIn Ignition, but the new free version (simply 'LogMeIn') amply provides for that barebones service, while bells and whistles are reserved for those who buy an in-app subscription to LogMeIn Pro at $40 per year -- including things like HD video and sound streaming, file transferring and integration with cloud storage services . Confusing matters slightly, the old Ignition app won't die. It'll live on in the App Store with a massively inflated price to support old Ignition customers and -- most importantly -- give them grandfather rights to Pro features, so they don't feel left out and start sniffing around the competition. There's a full PR after the break, and it also mentions that Android update is on its way in 2012.

Turkey accuses France of genocide after Armenian bill (Reuters)

ISTANBUL (Reuters) ? Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused France of genocide in Algeria in the 1940s and 50s, in his latest response to a French parliament vote to make it a crime to deny that the mass killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey was genocide.

Erdogan also said President Nicolas Sarkozy's father might have direct knowledge about French "massacres" in Algeria.

"In Algeria from 1945, an estimated 15 percent of the population was massacred by the French. This is a genocide," Erdogan said on live television.

"If the French President Mr Sarkozy doesn't know about this genocide he should go and ask his father, Paul Sarkozy.

"His father served in the French Legion in Algeria in the 1940s. I am sure he would have lots to tell his son about the French massacres in Algeria," the Turkish premier said.

Parliamentarians in France's lower house of parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of a draft law outlawing genocide denial Thursday, which the Senate will debate next year.

If passed, the bill would make it illegal to deny the 1915 mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks amounted to genocide. The issue has caused outrage in Turkey, which argues killings took place on all sides during a fierce partisan conflict.

Erdogan condemned the bill shortly after the vote, recalled Ankara's ambassador to France for consultations and cancelled all joint economic, political and military meetings. Friday, he vowed to take more steps.

"We will take gradual measures as long as the current (French) attitude is maintained," he said, without elaborating.

"The vote in the French parliament has shown how dangerous racism, discrimination and Islamophobia have become in France and Europe."

Although nearly a century has passed since the killings in the middle of World War One, successive Turkish governments and the vast majority of Turks feel the charge of Armenian genocide is an insult to their nation.

Motorola Wins Against Apple

Motorola recently experienced victory as the company won against Apple regarding a patent case filed in Germany.

Motorola, the Android-based smartphone manufacturer filed the patent case against Apple when the company filed to license one of the wireless intellectual properties that the company utilizes. This intellectual property is included in the technology used by Apple in their iPhone and 3G iPad devices. This case is also related to a patent claimed by Motorola which is a "method for performing a countdown function during a mobile-originated transfer for a packet radio system." Motorola licenses their patent to other companies on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms. Since Apple lost this case, Motorola could try to force Apple to remove this feature from the devices that they offer or opt to stop sales in Germany.

Motorola expressed its contentment regarding the court decision in a statement released by Scott Offer, senior VP and general counsel of Motorola Mobility. Offer said that "We (Motorola) will continue to take all necessary steps to protect our intellectual property, as the company's patent portfolio and licensing agreements with companies both in the US and around the world are critical to our business. We have been negotiating with Apple and offering reasonable licensing terms and conditions since 2007, and will continue our efforts to resolve our global patent dispute as soon as practicable."

Companies who own a Frand-type patent is under obligation to license out their technology to third-parties due to the fact that this invention is considered to be "essential" to an industry standard. Apple had previously expressed their willingness to pay a Frand-set fee in the future as well as paying a similar rate for past infringements. Despite Apple's willingness to pay the needed fees, the company lost because it attempted to "retain the right to contest the validity of the patent with a view to past damages". Apple decided to go with this strategy because Motorola defended the company's right to charge an above-Frand rate to Apple for the past four years.?

On the other hand, Apple expressed its discontent regarding the court's decision. Apple said that "we're (Apple) going to appeal the court's ruling right away. Holiday shoppers in Germany should have no problem finding the iPad or iPhone they want."

Keep an "Already Have This" List to Avoid Online Impulse Buys [Saving Money]

Keep an "Already Have This" List to Avoid Online Impulse BuysThe three types of goods Trent Hamm at The Simple Dollar tends to impulse buy online are books, board games, and video games from Steam. To help cut down on this tendency he keeps three sticky notes on his computer monitor that list the books and games he already has but has not yet read or played. Whenever he's tempted to buy another one of these items usually a glance at what he already has on tap and hasn't used yet keeps him from making the impulse purchase.

Whether your impulse shopping weaknesses are LEGO sets or Vinyl Albums using this technique should help you control your purchases, particularly if you're not a collector but just an enthusiast. Photo by Elizabeth

(AP) ? As many as 20,000 children endured sexual abuse at Dutch Catholic institutions over the past 65 years, and church officials failed to adequately address it or help the victims, according to a long-awaited investigative report released Friday.

The findings detailed some of the most widespread abuse yet linked to the Roman Catholic Church, which has been under fire for years over abuse allegations in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.

Based on a survey of 34,000 people, the report estimated that 1 in 10 Dutch children suffered some form of sexual abuse ? a figure that rose to 1 in 5 among children who spent part of their youth in an institution such as a boarding school or children's home, whether Catholic or not.

"Sexual abuse of minors," it said bluntly, "occurs widely in Dutch society."

The findings prompted the archbishop of Utrecht, Wim Eijk, to apologize to victims on behalf of the Dutch church, saying the report "fills us with shame and sorrow."

The abuse ranged from "unwanted sexual advances" to rape, and abusers numbered in the hundreds and included priests, brothers and lay people who worked in religious orders and congregations. The number of victims who suffered abuse in church institutions likely lies somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000, according to the probe, which went back as far as 1945.

The commission behind the investigation was set up last year by the Catholic Church under the leadership of a former government minister, Wim Deetman, a Protestant, who said there could be no doubt church leaders knew of the problem. "The idea that people did not know there was a risk ... is untenable," he told a news conference.

Deetman said abuse continued in part because bishops and religious orders sometimes worked autonomously to deal with the abuse and "did not hang out their dirty laundry." However, he said the commission concluded that "it is wrong to talk of a culture of silence" by the church as a whole.

Colm O'Gorman, executive director of Amnesty International in Ireland and a victim of clergy abuse, criticized the Dutch inquiry because it was established by the church itself.

"It is the Dutch government that should be putting in place a meaningful investigation," O'Gorman said.

Even so, he said the report "highlights widespread abuse on a scale I think would be shocking to most Dutch people."

But O'Gorman added that "the scale of the abuse is in and of itself not the significant issue. It is whether it was covered up and, significantly, this report suggests it was."

Nearly a third of the Netherlands' 16 million people identify themselves as Catholic, making it the largest religion in the country, according to the Dutch Central Bureau for Statistics for 2008.

The Dutch probe followed allegations of repeated incidents of abuse at one cloister that spread to claims from Catholic institutions across the country.

The investigating commission received some 1,800 complaints of abuse at Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages. It then conducted the broader survey of 34,000 people for a more comprehensive analysis of the scale and nature of sexual abuse of minors in the church and elsewhere.

In one order, the Salesians of Don Bosco, the commission found evidence that "sexually inappropriate behavior" among members "may perhaps have been part of the internal monastic culture."

Bert Smeets, an abuse victim, said the report did not go far enough in investigating and outlining in precise detail exactly what happened.

"What was happening was sexual abuse, violence, spiritual terror, and that should have been investigated," Smeets told The Associated Press. "It remains vague. All sorts of things happened, but nobody knows exactly what or by whom. This way they avoid responsibility."

The commission said about 800 priests, brothers, pastors or lay people working for the church were identified in the complaints. About 105 of them are still alive, although it is not known if they remain in church positions. Their names were not released.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Deetman's inquiry had referred 11 cases to them ? without naming the alleged perpetrators. Prosecutors opened only one investigation, saying the other 10 did not have sufficient details and happened too long ago to prosecute.

The latest findings add to the growing evidence of widespread clergy abuse of children documented in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Belgium and other countries, forcing Pope Benedict XVI to apologize to victims whose trauma was often hidden by church cover-ups.

In September, abuse victims and human rights lawyers, upset that no high-ranking church officials have yet to be prosecuted, filed a complaint in the United States urging the International Criminal Court to investigate the pope and top Vatican officials for possible crimes against humanity. The Vatican called the move a "ludicrous publicity stunt."

An American advocacy group involved in that case, the Center for Constitutional Rights, called the Dutch findings "yet another example of the widespread and systematic nature of the problem of child sex crimes in the Catholic Church."

"If similar commissions were held in every country, we would undoubtedly be equally appalled by the rates of abuse," it said.

Archbishop Eijk said the victims in the Netherlands would be compensated by a commission the Dutch church set up last month and which has a scale starting at $6,500 (euro5,000), rising to a maximum of $130,000 (euro100,000) depending on the nature of the abuse.

O'Gorman criticized the church-established compensation scheme.

"It is simply not appropriate for the church to be the decider" of compensation, he said. "It is important the Dutch government recognizes its responsibility to ensure access to justice ... to all victims."
