Omni Health & Fitness Sites Earn Medical Fitness Association ...

Franciscan Omni Health and Fitness Schererville and Chesterton locations have become among only about 30 in the world to become certified as medical fitness facilities by national Medical Fitness Association.

"This certification process is a significant step forward in the health of the entire community and to the individuals taking responsibility for their personal health care," the association said, adding, "This program is the first and only certification offered facilities in the medical fitness industry, which serves more than four million members worldwide."

Certification follows an in-depth review of a facility's adherence to prescribed standards and guidelines and is recognized as a mark of excellence in the industry, according to the association.

Sharon Sporman, Omni regional executive director, termed the certification a great honor. "The process itself has increased awareness of our staff as we have raised the bar in establishing higher standards of service, safety and results-oriented programs for our membership and communities. Thanks to our staff in this achievement and to Ryan Svenstrup in helping to guide the ship in the application process."

The not-for-profit association says its purpose is to lead in the development and operational success of medically integrated fitness centers and affect the global continuum of care by providing research, industry standards, operational guidelines, educational programming, benchmarking, outcome measurements, professional development and networking opportunities.

Omni Health and Fitness locations are under the auspices of Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Dyer and Hammond (Schererville) and Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City (Chesterton).

Dr. James Callaghan, Franciscan St. Anthony Health president, said, "Obtaining this certification demonstrates our Franciscan Omni centers' commitment to the overall health of our patients. We take care of patients at all levels of fitness pursuits, whether one is recovering from a heart attack, or training for a marathon."

LONDON (AP) ? A lobbyist for Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. testified Thursday that he thought a U.K. government minister knew that one of his aides was providing Murdoch's company with information on its bid to take over the British Sky Broadcasting satellite network.

Lobbyist Fred Michel told the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics that he knew he was not supposed to have direct discussions with Jeremy Hunt, Britain's secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport, who was to decide whether the controversial bid for the lucrative broadcaster could proceed.

The bid was abandoned last year as News Corp. was engulfed in a phone hacking scandal at News of the World, its top-selling Sunday tabloid, which was shut down as a result in July. The same scandal prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to appoint Justice Brian Leveson to lead an inquiry into media wrongdoing.

Journalists at the now-defunct tabloid routinely hacked phones to get stories, bypassing weak security to illegally eavesdrop on private conversations of politicians, celebrities, sports stars and other public figures. The scandal has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest of dozens of people and casting a harsh light on relations among Britain's press, politicians and the police.

Hunt's contacts with Michel are an issue because the minister was supposed to be acting in a "quasi-judicial" role, aloof from contacts with interested parties. Yet a cache of emails disclosed by News Corp. has raised questions about whether Hunt strayed from that impartial role.

Michel made 191 telephone calls and sent 158 emails and 799 texts to Hunt's office between June 2010, when News Corp. ? the biggest shareholder in BSkyB ? announced its bid to buy out other shareholders, and July 2011, when the bid was abandoned.

More than 90 percent of those contacts were with Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith, Michel said.

Although Michel's emails to News Corp. colleagues ? including Murdoch's son James, a top executive in his father's company ? frequently attributed information to "JH," Michel said that was shorthand for Hunt's office, not for the minister personally.

Michel also admitted that some of the more provocative material in his emails was his own interpretation or, in at least one case, a "very bad joke."

Asked if he thought Smith accurately reflected Hunt's view, Michel said: "I would have to assume that special advisers, and there are not many around the secretary of state ? there were two in that case ? always represent the view of their boss."

"There (were) two or three events where I probably had the impression that some of the feedback I was being given had been discussed with the secretary of state before it was given to me," Michel added.

Michel said News Corp. had two formal meetings with Hunt about the bid, and the lobbyist also exchanged some text messages with Hunt.

"I don't think anything inappropriate ever took place," Michel said.

"I was never of the opinion that it was inappropriate to at least try to put the arguments to or make representations to these officers," Michel said at another point.

Under questioning by Robert Jay, the senior lawyer for the inquiry, Michel said his emails did not always accurately reflect his discussions with Smith.

Jay cited one message that Michel sent to Hunt in September 2010 asking about reports that another minister who was then in charge of the bid intended to delay a decision. "Don't know anything," Hunt said in a text message.

Michel then reported to his colleagues: "Jeremy Hunt is not aware and thinks it is not credible at all."

In an email to News Corp. colleagues on Jan. 24, 2011, Michel excitedly relayed details of a statement Hunt would make the next day: "Managed to get some infos on the plans for tomorrow (although absolutely illegal...(at)!)"

On Thursday, Michel said that was a "very bad joke."

"I have since learned that it is not unusual to get pre-notification for a statement in Parliament to be given to some of the parties to the transaction," Michel said.

The Situation Wonders In Rehab: 'How Did I Get Here?'

'At first, I thought that it might have gave me energy. I thought it helped me,' the 'Jersey Shore' star says of prescription painkillers.

When he first began taking prescription painkillers, "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino said the medication helped him deal with the crazy rush of fame he experienced as the show's stars turned from regular kids to international superstars.

But as he told MTV News' Sway Calloway in an exclusive interview, the crutch quickly turned into a dependence that proved hard to shake.

"At first, I thought that it might have gave me energy," Situation said. "I thought it helped me. Because it's a painkiller, you're not tired anymore. Then after a while, you're like, 'Oh, wow, maybe this is gonna help my schedule out.' I'm always on planes, I'm always flying, I'm flying there. I don't want anybody to feel bad for me at all. I'm just saying that being in this business is not easy, and it's definitely not for everybody.

Sorrentino said he now realizes he made a mistake in choosing pills over the thing that used to keep him pumped up: exercise. And he vehemently denied rumors that there were other substances — such as cocaine, alcohol or marijuana — that fed his addiction. "Strictly painkillers," he said. "And never even mixed them. ... Even on 'Jersey Shore,' which obviously people have seen me with a drink in my hand. But I was never drunk. I was the guy that was the ladies' man. You can't get girls if you can't speak to them. Drinking was definitely not an issue for me, for sure."

He described his first day in rehab and the difficulty of dealing with his new reality. "Your first day is detox," he said of the program he attended. "It's not a pleasurable experience at all. ... In the beginning, for sure, when I was [at the facility] in Utah, I'd wake up and just be extremely disappointed with myself. Like, 'I can't believe I got here. How did I get here? Like, I can't believe this.' "

Though he didn't do serious damage to his career, his pocketbook or his family, Sorrentino now realizes that all those things could have happened. "You hear stories all the time of celebrities and people just not even waking up ... that could be me, you know?"

His biggest fear, though, was that rehab might not stick and he would find himself right back in the same scenario. "That's exactly what I was thinking," he said. "The results, your health, your mind, your body, it's not coming back as quick as you want it to. I'll be honest, the only thing that comes back quick is your emotions."

After years of blocking out feelings of fear, pain and anxiety, once he began detoxing, Sorrentino all of a sudden began feeling anger, sadness, disappointment, pressure and dismay. "Everything just hits you all at once, and it feels like you're not going to recover," he said. "It feels like it's an impossible deed. Day by day, you're like, 'When is it going to get better? When is it going to get better?' But day by day, it does."

Instead of rolling the ball uphill these days, Mike said it finally feels hopeful that he can make it through this challenge.

One of the first things he did after leaving rehab was change his cell number and eliminate the people and places in his life that were familiar in a negative way. "If I don't do business with you or work with you, I probably don't talk to you," he said.

When Sway asked if Mike is worried about relapsing, Sorrentino laughed nervously and said, "You're not supposed to think like that. You're supposed to take it one day at a time. If all you have to concentrate on is that one day and today and being your best ... I think you should be good for that day and you're not gonna relapse."
